About the assessment
A full diagnostic assessment is the most thorough way to understand any hearing change you are experiencing. At NQ Hearing Centre, adult assessments are conducted by accredited audiologists
using calibrated diagnostic equipment - the same standard used across hospital and University audiology departments and research centers.
What the test covers
Standard tests used for hearing assessments are:
- Video otoscopy -Examines the ear canal and ear drum
- Tympanometry - Measures the movement of ear drum
- Wideband absorbance - Advanced test that is sensitive to detect minor problems with the ear drum and middle ear function
- Acoustic reflex -Assesses middle and inner ear function and auditory nerve pathway
- Otoacoustic emissions - Measures inner ear function
- Pure tone audiometry - Measures the softest sounds you can hear across a range of tones
- Speech recognition in quiet Assesses how you understand spoken words in quiet situations
- Speech recognition with background noise Assesses how you understand speech when there is background noise
Depending on your symptoms and purpose of the assessment, additional tests can be performed and these include:
- Tinnitus assessment
- Hyperacusis assessment
- Extended high frequency assessment
- Audible contrast test (ACT)- advanced non-language test
- Most comfortable level (MCL) and uncomfortable level (UCL) tests
The appointment typically takes about 60 minutes. A written report will be provided to your referring GP or specialist. You can also request a copy of the results.
