About the assessment

A children's hearing assessment at NQ Hearing Centre is a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation- not a simple pass/fail screen. We measure the full range of hearing thresholds and measure the function of the outer, middle and inner ear to provide you, your treating GP or allied health professional or referring agency with a complete clinical picture.

All assessments are conducted by accredited clinical audiologists. We use age-appropriate

techniques to keep children engaged and comfortable throughout the appointment.

 What the test involves

Tests are tailored to your child's age and cooperation level. For most children aged 3 years and over, we use:

  • Video otoscopy - To examine the ear canal and ear drum
  • Tympanometry - A painless test to measure the movement of ear drum
  • Wideband absorbance To measure the function of the middle ear and detect any problems with middle ear function
  • Acoustic reflex -  To measure the auditory nerve pathway
  • Otoacoustic emissions - Non-invasive way to measure inner ear function
  • Pure tone audiometry - To measure the softest sounds your child can hear across a range of tones
  • Speech audiometry - To assess how your child understands spoken words

The appointment typically takes 45 to 60 minutes.  A written report will be provided to your referring GP or specialist. You can also request a copy of the results.

Who should be tested

We recommend a diagnostic hearing test for any child where there is a concern.

Common referral reasons include:

  • School readiness or school entry check
  • Speech delay or unclear speech
  • Difficulty following instructions or appear inattentive
  • ADHD, Autism, developmental delay
  • Recurrent ear infections or history of glue ear
  • Failed hearing screening at school or maternal and child visit
  • Family history of childhood hearing loss
  • Concerns raised by child, parent, teacher, child care worker or GP
